Resumen
Verbena Carolina known as verbena is used in the Mexican folk medicine for the biliary diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of verbena on the acute intoxication of CCl4 in female Wistar rats. The animals were protected with verbena and colchicine (positive control) orally for seven days and CCl4 was given ip (2.5 mL kg-1) on day 8. CCl4-induced the increase of serum activities of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin and MDA concentrations but decreased the hepatic glycogen. Verbena just partially protected the increase of γGT. Colchicine partially protected all the biomarkers studied. No changes in sleeping time were observed in CCl4-treated rats. The LD50 was higher than 30 mg kg-1.
