Abstract

Levy (2008) argues that the lack of quality social security services represents an incentive to informality. This work shows that the perception of individuals about social security in Mexico influences the decision of individuals to choose to work in informality. Using a probit econometric model, the results indicate that the quality of service of social security institutions such as imss and issste influences 38% of workers' decision to work in informality. The research supports the assumption that not only exclusion factors, but also escape factors, influence individuals' decisions to opt for formal or informal employment in Mexico.
