Resumen

The ultrasound putse velocity is based on the time an ultrasonic wave propagates through a concrete specimen andit has generally been employed to verify concrete uniformity, to detect internal defects, and to estimate in-situ concrete strength. lt is known that ultrasound waves collect information about the concrete specimen used as propagation medium. The aim of the present study is to identify aggregates and cement paste during concrete hydration process, by performing Fourier analysis of the ultrasonic response of cylindrical concrete specimens to different excitation frequencies. Thirty-five cylindrical concrete specimens of 10 cm diameter and 20 cm length were cast with concrete. lts water- to-cement ratio was 0.60. The coarse aggregate used was l imestone with a maximum size of 13 mm and the fine aggregate was river sand with a fineness module o f 2.67. After 1 day, the specimens were stripped and moist curedin a saturated time solution at 23 ± 2°C for 28 days. Five specimens were studied at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 28 days using longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves with frequencies ranging from 50 kHz to 1 MHz. The analysis of the evolution in frequencies observedin the specimens distinguishes variations related to progressive hydration of the cement paste, contrary to the invariant behavior of the inert aggregate.
