Resumen

In the present work, the inhibition mechanism of three quaternary-ammonium-derived ionic liquids (ILs) is proposed. Studies were aimed at eliciting the effect exerted by the length of the alkyl chain of the anion carboxylate (HOOC-CnH2n-COO) in this type of compounds on the corrosion inhibition of API X60 steel in 1 M H2SO4. The inhibition efficiency (η) ranged from 55 to 80% and was obtained by means of the weight loss and electrochemical techniques. The adsorption of the ILs on the steel surface obeyed Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic data indicated that the adsorption of the evaluated ILs is controlled by the combination of physicochemical processes. Furthermore, the adsorption phenomenon was related to the orientation of the anion functional group HCOO and cation nitrogen. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses confirmed the adsorption of the ILs on the steel surface, which slowed down the corrosion rate.
