Resumen

Hydroxyapatite powder was synthesized by the precipitation technique, starting from aqueous solutions of phosphoric acid and calcium hydroxide. To the hydroxyapatite powders were added 5, 10 or 20 wt % titanium oxide (anatase) as a reinforcing agent, powders were mixed by high energy mechanical milling during different times (0.5, 0.75 and 1h) in order to obtain homogeneous mixtures. With the powder mixture it was manufactured a paste, same that was extruded to obtain a solid cylinder using a stainless steel die. Finally, extruded cylinders were sintered in an electrical furnace at 1100°C during 1 h. Synthesized materials were characterized by IR, XRD, SEM and mechanically. XRD results show that in the sintered products are present mainly the crystalline phases; hydroxyapatite and titanium oxide in anatase form, these phases also could be identified in the infrared analysis. After milling, powders present sizes smaller than 5 microns. Microhardness and fracture toughness was similar to the values of human bone reported in literature of these same properties.
