Resumen

Some steels are subjected to metal dusting corrosion in highly carburizing atmospheres, which represents significant economical losses in some industrial processes. An approach to metal dusting prevention is based on the formation of a dense layer of oxide on the steel surface. In the present work, PVD coatings of protective aluminum oxides have been applied to HK4O substrates. The coatings were produced by reactive magnetron sputtering under different processing conditions. Thermogravimetric analysis of the coated samples was then carried out in metal dusting conditions. The microstructure of the samples after coating and after metal dusting was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy + energy dispersive analysis and x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that this is a promising method to increase the resistance to metal dusting for these types of alloys.
