The 4th International Symposium on New Catalytic Materials was held in Cancun, Mexico, within the framework of the XX International Materials Research Congress, which was organized jointly by the Sociedad Mexicana de Materiales (SMM) and the Materials Research Society (MRS). About 94 papers were presented during this meeting, with 7 invited talks, 13 regular talks and 74 posters. The scope of this Symposium comprised both fundamental and applied aspects of new catalysts and catalysis. The most outstanding research papers were peer-reviewed and 34 were finally accepted for publication in Catalysis Today, all of them based upon quality criteria and relevance for actual challenges posed by the chemical, environmental, refining and petrochemicals industries, mainly, as well as those related with the search of suitable catalysts and processes for photocatalysis, renewable fuels and fine chemicals production. The symposium afforded the opportunity for presenting recent results on new catalytic materials and catalysis issues with a technological perspective, which intended to emphasize the research and discovery driven by applications in the field. Other insights on catalytic science and basic aspects on new catalytic materials were not forgotten, but were presented and discussed as well. Again, this special issue reflects the interest of the international scientific community on new topics like the chemical transformations of renewable resources for bio-fuels and hydrogen production, photocatalysis and environmental issues. In particular some specific topics of interest were discussed, as for example the recent developments in Nano- and Meso-structured materials (metals, metal oxides, carbon fibers, MCM-41, SBA-15, etc.); clean fuels (hydrogen, low-sulphur hydrocarbon fuels, environmental catalysis (de-NOx, de-SOx, VO’x); bio-fuels (biomass conversion, glycerol conversion, etc); hydrocarbon refining (FCC, isomerización, etc.) and deep hydroprocessing issues; C1 chemistry (GTL, Methanol synthesis, F-T, etc.). We hope the readers of this issue will find the contributions to the 4th Symposium both exciting and productive.
