¿por qué estudiar a las bacterias anaerobias obligadas?

Obligate anaerobic bacteria are a group of microorganisms which do not need molecular oxygen for their development and have high nutritional requirements. They can cause infections in humans and animals. Often, these bacteria are associated with other bacterial group like aerobes or facultative anaerobes to cause polymicrobial or mixed infections. The isolation and identification of these bacteria are not routinely performed in clinical laboratories; however, certain characteristics of infections in patients as well as samples could suggest their presence as etiologic agents. Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections is usually empirical but the antimicrobial resistance is increasing in some genera of clinical importance. This review intended to highlight the most important aspects of the isolation and identification of obligate anaerobic bacteria, the importance of infections caused by these microorganisms and recent studies focused on their identification in Mexico.
