Resumen

The special characteristics or the hypothesis accepted in the governing analytical expressions of numerical models, or inadequate input data may cause these models to be inaccurate when estimating physical phenomena. One means of overcoming these limits is the integration of combined or hybrid models. The hybrid tool presented here is composed of a third-generation model (WAM,) which estimates the deep water wave field as a function of wind data and another model (HURAC), which uses cyclonic data to compute the wave, wind, and atmospheric pressure fields. This second model is presented here as an updated version in which the accuracy has been enhanced (as shown by the validation described in this paper) and the execution has been optimized. The results of the hybrid model are compared to the data measured by 7 oceanographic buoys which registered the effects of 13 hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean over the 2005 season. The good correlation between both sets of data makes the hybrid tool a reliable information source for gathering information on the marine climate in deep water for both mean and extraordinary conditions.
