At ININ in Mexico, another research project on controlling neutron power of a TRIGA Mark I~ research reactor with fuzzy control by a slightly different approach has been carried out. Over the past years, the study for this project has mainly been devoted to the design and comparative studies of different fi~zzy control algorithms for a nuclear reactor with some extended simulation results (Benitez-Read et al, 2002). The project has been partially supported by CONACYT (the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology) during the period 2001-2004. ININ has recently upgraded its TRIGA Mark 11I Reactor's control room into a digital system, which makes it much easier for further fuzzy control and other intelligent control algorithms/tools to be implemented as a test bed. The new research plan for this project is foreseen under the support of CONACYT.

N2 - The purpose of this paper is to present some of the main reasons, objectives, planning, and recent advances of an SCK·CEN/ININ joint project, which deals with the design and application of modern/expert control and real-time simulation techniques for the safe operation of a TRIGA Mark III research nuclear reactor. This project has been proposed as the first of its kind under a general cooperation agreement between the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK·CEN) and the National Nuclear Research Institute (ININ) of Mexico.
