Resumen

Advancements in knowledge and its use have often been related as one of the leading indicators of economic development and social welfare for countries and regions. Regardless of what theoretical-methodological factors are driving knowledge development, however, access to this intangible asset is limited to various economic, social, and cultural circumstances and even of the knowledge per se that each individual develops within society. The primary objective of this research project is to conduct a theoretical analysis, from a sociological perspective on science and technology, of the role the public university plays in democratizing knowledge within its community and in society at large, pointing out key advancements and the obstacles that arise in the process of disseminating this knowledge.
