Abstract

The dependence of the mechanical properties with respect to the microstructural orientation of a low carbon steel API-5L grade X46 pipe was evaluated. Steel presented anisotropic mechanical behavior, associated with the material forming process. The longitudinal direction (L), parallel to the microstructural banding, has a lower fracture resistance compared with the circumferential direction (C); therefore, it is concluded that the microstructural banding and crystallographic texture decrease at least 10% the fracture toughness of a material in the longitudinal direction.
