Abstract

An experimental study was carried out to know the rheological behavior of a commercial mLLDPE and to examine the effect of temperature on the onset of the unstable oscillating flow in linear polyethylenes. Rheological measurements were performed on the commercial metallocene LLDPE EXACT 3132 at temperatures between 110 and 190°C. Critical shear stress for the onset of unstable flow was determined as a function of temperature. It was observed that flow-induced crystallization and extrudate quality are dependent on the contraction ratio at 110°C. Extrudates free of surface distortions were obtained at T<116°C. In addition, a decrease in the activation energy for flow was found at temperatures below the critical one.
