Abstract

The fabrication and characterisation of a telluritephotonic crystal fibre amplifier is reported. The preform consists of a 12 mm external diameter tellurite tube which is filled with an array of nonperiodic tellurite capillaries and an erbium doped tellurite rod that constitutes the fibre nucleus. The preform was drawn in a Heathway Drawing Tower, producing fibres with diameters between 120-140 μm. Cross sections of the fibre photographed in an optical microscope shows that the light is being guided by total internal reflection. The following characteristics of the fibre were assessed: photoluminescence, refractive index, absorbance, thermal properties and spontaneous emission spectra.
