N2 - The production of Al2O3-based functionally gradient materials, with different amounts of fine reinforcement particles of titanium and titanium-dispersed carbide was explored. The functionally gradient materials synthesis has been induced by means of both; solid sintering of Al 2O3-titanium powders mixed under high energy milling via pressureless sintering and formation of titanium carbide at 500 °C by a cementation pack process. SEM analyses of the microstructures obtained in cemented bodies were performed in order to know the effect of the cementant (graphite) on the titanium in each composite. In this way, it was found that different depths of titanium carbide layer were obtained as a function of the titanium content in the functionally graded materials. On the other hand, the use of reinforcing titanium enhanced significantly density and fracture toughness of the functionally materials.
