Abstract

XRF, XRD, EM, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetization measurements, and electron microprobe analyses have been used to study the oxidation state of two samples of obsidian from Lipari and from near Teotihuacan, central Mexico. The Lipari obsidian contains isolated iron (mainly Fe2+) and ultrafine (<100 A) clusters of magnetite, whereas the Mexican material contains both Fe2+ and Fe3+ in addition to the magnetite clusters (100-900 A) representing about 50% of the total Mossbauer absorption. -R.A.H.
