Abstract

An approach to estimate the mean annual failure rate and confidence factor by using simplified closed-form expressions is proposed. The approach considers a normalization index of structural demand and capacity called, lpc. The proposed approach is compared with the approach that does not consider the variables of structural demand and structural capacity as normalized variables. The uncertainties related with geometric and mechanical properties as well as seismic occurrences are considered. The approach is illustrated on a reinforced concrete bridge located in transition soil of Mexico City. The bridge is designed to comply with a drift ratio of 0.003. Recommendations about design are made based on structural reliability indicators.
