Rubus: Bioactive compounds and their neuroprotective effect

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The bioactive compounds present in the genus Rubus, mainly, phenolic compounds such as flavonoids (anthocyanins, flavanols and phenolic acids) and ellagitannins, have garnered special attention due to the health benefits of their consumption. However, their biological activity is related with their absorption and metabolism. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the available scientific information of the bioactive compounds in Rubus (blackberries and raspberries) and their bioavalibility, as well as their effect on intestinal microbiota and tissue distribution.
