Abstract

In this reply to a comment by Yan on our previous article [J. Appl. Phys. 81, 2973 (1997)], we show that the compromise function C(ε) between high power output and low entropy production for CAN engines, proposed in that article to find the best ecological function, is not tautological. Moreover, this procedure is useful to construct the best ecological function for any heat transfer law used in endoreversible thermal engine models.
