Abstract

The dried powder of Daphnia pulex was consecutively extracted with hexane, chloroform, and methanol and destilled under reduced pressure. Concentrated extracts were transferred to a vacuum desiccator and dried to constant weight. The antioxidative properties of the extracts was performed by the ferric thiocyanate method. The hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts of D. pulex (100 μg/mL) inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid by 84.1 82.1 and 83.4% respectively. α-Tocoferol (100 μg/mL) showed a strong antioxidative activity inhibiting the oxidation of linoleic acid by 81.3% had also inhibited the decoloration of β-caroteno, the effect of the free radical scavenging over DPPH and ABTS radicals and degradation inhibition of 2-deoxy-2-ribose. The antioxidant property of D. pulex, may be due to the presence of the carotenoids: lutein, echinone, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, β-caroteno, isocrytoxanthin and isozeaxanthin isolated previously.
