Abstract

The paper explores some aspects regarding the eff ects of the ash clouds caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano on some of the European countries. The approach has been the use of a systemic model; i.e., a Systemic Safety Management System (SSMS). The model has highlighted that interdependencies occur ‘vertically’ and ‘horizontally’. In the context of the model, failures propagate ‘vertically’ and ‘horizontally’. The model has shown that it has the potentiality to be applied to a large scale systems to model interdependency as with the present case study. The manuscript gives an account of the ongoing research project.
