Abstract
We calculate the differential cross section and initial-state polarization observables of pi d elastic scattering at 294, 325 and 417 MeV. Our results are compared with some available data. We use as a basic framework a relativistic three-body model that takes into account the six pion-nucleon S- and P-wave channels and the nucleon-nucleon 1S0 and 3S1-3D1 channels. To this model we have now added the contribution of the pion-nucleon D- and F-waves in the impulse approximation. We have found that the vector analysing power iT 11 is very sensitive to the pion-nucleon D-and F-waves and give an explanation of this sensitivity as a consequence of a peculiar symmetry of the isoscalar pi N amplitude that occurs at around these energies.
