Abstract

This chapter reviews the state and applications of organosilanes in the protection of easily oxidised metals such as aluminium, steel and copper, among others. The first section assesses the different kinds of silanes used for this purpose, paying special attention to functional groups and chain size. The second section analyses the most common synthesis methods and the adsorption mechanism of silane compounds on various substrates. The third section shows the application of organosilanes for corrosion protection, studying different techniques and the effect on corrosion resistance of using different functional groups. The disadvantages of organosilanes are discussed in the fourth section, along with the need for their modification via different strategies, such as the incorporation of nanoparticles or the use of inhibitors. The final section shows the use of bilayers either entirely of organosilanes or systems with organosilanes as the first and second layer.
