Abstract

We present the optimal performance of nonlinear systems rectifying thermal fluctuations considering the power and efficiency as objective functions. We also obtain the behaviour of the power-efficiency curves of these mesoscopic systems. This behaviour is analysed and discussed in relation with previous results reported for macroscopic heat engine models in classical thermodynamics, some biological steady models using linear irreversible thermodynamics, and the Feynman's ratchet. Interestingly, we find a unified qualitative behaviour of power and efficiency versus an appropriate independent variable for all considered heat engines, independent of its nature.
