Abstract

solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) were developed as an alternative carrier system to emulsions, liposomes and polymeric nanoparticles. Particulate structures based in solid lipids such as "solid lipid nanoparticles" (SLN), "nanostructurated lipid carriers" (NLC), lipid-coated nanoparticles (LNPs) and "lipid drug conjugate nanoparticles" (LDC) are presented. Aspects of the physical stability and the characterization of SLN are discussed through parameters such as particle size and zeta potential, the measurement of crystallinity and the lipid modification. These and other analytical methods such as differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance and their use in SLN are briefly described.
