Abstract

An image segmentation algorithm based on region growing with robust estimation, using the mode of the region elements, is presented. With this algorithm it is possible to do brain MRI segmentation with reasonable results and speed, specially in connected regions in which region growing methods are well suited. Head MRI from eight normal volunteers were used to run the segmentation program and the result was validated by a MR neuroradiologist. Border elements can be included doing a small correction, white and gray matter were segmented easily and more complex functional areas can be obtained too.
