Mechanical and electrochemical properties of concrete-reforced steel by adition of sugar cane bagasse: Study of the alkali-hydrolysis reaction

Abstract

This work focuses in the effect of addition of sugar cane bagasse (SCB) at different amounts (0.5 and 1% w/w) by substituting the fine aggregate in the concrete final mixture. To determinate the structural, mechanical, electrochemical and electrical properties of the aging of the samples were performed experiments which explain the chemical shifts induced by the time (4 years of life each specimen). The samples has been exposed to different atmospheres (saline water, sulfuric acid (5% v/v) and saturate sand with saline water). XRD patterns diffraction plane (0 0 2) shift to lowers angles and more intense compared with the concrete pristine, which could be related to a more crystalline structure. The Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) show that exist one or more signals fluorescence that correspond to aromatic lignin rings present in the concrete-reinforced steel with SCB. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) show the main electronics transition from organic compounds and the Cls, Ols, Ca2p confirming the SCB presence in the concrete, respectively. The electrochemical results indicate that, when the specimen was exposed to the controlled atmosphere the system showed a higher corrosion resistance, also by EIS found that the system are controlled by diffusion. By the Weimer method was found that the concrete-SCB system reduce it electrical resistivity in the time compared with the concrete pristine. All results indicated that by adding SCB to the concrete-reinforcement steel, improve the electrochemical, structural and electrical properties, which can be used to retard aging concrete.
