Abstract

Population pharmacokinetics has its main application in the study of the behavior of drugs, by estimating the average values of pharmacokinetic parameters in a group of individuals or a population of patients and the inter-individual variability associated with these parameters. The variability of drug response depends on various characteristics related to the pathophysiological situation of patients such as age, gender, weight, genetic factors, environmental factors, diseases, health status, etc. Population models provide an initial guide to develop dosing regimens to achieve and maintain a certain plasma concentration in each patient. The purpose of this review article is to understand the applications of population pharmacokinetic studies and identify the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics that may influence the pharmacokinetics of the drugs tested.
