Abstract

Electron transmission microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and tensor stress analysis were applied to study heat treatment effects on strengthening mechanism in rolled beryllium foils. Foil annealing was carried out within the range of 510-780°C for 0.5-5.8h. Low temperature annealings 500-600°C were found to result in stress relaxation but not in grain growth. Essential grain growth was revealed at temperatures higher than 650°C and accompanied by precipitation of excessive phases along grain boundaries. It was concluded that short-term annealing at 550°C was the best way to improve strength of beryllium foils.
