Abstract

© 2017 IEEE. The presented work is aimed to study the boundary layer re-attachment of flow over an airfoil at high angles of attack. To promote the reattachment, a flat profile with an asymmetric DBD actuator on one of its surfaces was built based on the optimization improvements of the actuator to observe its effect at quiescent flow conditions. Subsequently, asymmetric actuators were tested in streamwise orientation on the upper surface of a NACA 0018 airfoil. The plasma actuators were installed symmetrically between the leading edge and trailing edge of the profile. We have used Schlieren type-z optical arrangement to study the flow induced in atmospheric pressure air by electrohydrodynamic body forces generated by a DBD plasma actuator energized by a radiofrequency power supply. The schlieren images show the absence of significant vertical flow. The electrical parameters of the discharge were generated by a radiofrequency source operating 1-16 Kvpp at a frequency 17-35 KHz.
