Abstract
The genus Azospirillum is classified within the group of plant growth promoting bacteria. The contribution of this bacterium on plant growth through nitrogen fixation has been speculated. That is why various researches have been undertaken to know more about the genetic basis of this process. With the advances obtained on Klebsiella pneumoniae, a better comprehension of the regulation and organization of the genes nif in others nitrogen fixers has been achieved. Several key regulatory and structural genes involving in nitrogen metabolism have been isolated and characterized in Azospirillum, including nifHDK, nifA, ntrBC, glnA, glnB and rpoN. This work revises the genetics and regulation of the nitrogen metabolism in Azospirillum.
