Abstract

A complex scientific, research and design work was carried out with the aim to create high effective "gas-gas" heat exchangers based on heat pipes, better known as two-phase thermo-syphons. The heat pipe device consists of a bimetallic tube with spiral aluminum fins. Distilled water with some impurities is used as heat transfer medium. A method of thermo-technical performance calculation for heat exchangers based on heat pipes has been developed and applied. Proposed heat exchangers have been used for heat recovery in low power boilers. In all cases the boiler thermal efficiency was improved up to 5-10% and the thermal pollution was reduced in an important amount. They were used mainly as water economizers and air-heaters in gas-fired boilers. The main characteristics of this kind of heat exchangers for different applications and their advantages in comparison with conventional constructions are presented in this paper.Problems related to the improving boiler parameters, decreasing fuel consumption, dropping down the heat exchanger mass and overall dimensions, reduction of the thermal pollution in the environment are discussed as well.
