FT-IR characterization of [bupy]BF4-MCl3 (M = Al, Fe) ionic liquids using new molecular probe and their alkylation performance

Abstract

In the present work, the acidity of [bupy]BF4-MCl3 (M = Al, Fe) ionic liquids was characterized by means of FT-IR technique using acetonitrile as molecular probe. The results show that only Lewis acidity is present in these ionic liquids and the acidity strength of [bupy]BF4-AlCl3 is stronger than [bupy]BF4-FeCl3. In the alkylation reaction of toluene and 1,3-pentadiene to produce pentenyltoluene, the catalytic activities of these ionic liquids catalysts can be correlated with their Lewis acidity.
