Abstract

Explosive welding has proven to be an economical and technologically successful process. However, detailed understanding of the parameters involve in the process has only recently been developed and tailored through gas gun experiments. The use of welding processing domains, obtained from these gas gun studies, makes it possible to determine the explosive welding parameters for any system in non-complex geometrical configurations. In this brief review, examples of these domain maps are presented. Evidence that an impact welding mechanism occurs during dynamic consolidation of powders and particles is also presented. Consolidation being a solid bonding mechanism, it is important to verify the value of the parameters under which this bonding is acquired. It is proposed that impact bonding domains for particles are a promising technique to ensure effective consolidation of non-equilibrium powder materials.
