Abstract

In a companion paper, the relationship between crack propagation stability and the second coefficient of the Williams stress function has been discussed and the program ANGCRK was validated. In this paper, ANGCRK has been used in the evaluation of crack propagation stability in edge-cracked plates under biaxial loading. For this purpose, the effects of the applied loads on different points is studied. Then the second coefficient of the Williams stress field of the problems at hand is calculated, identifying those cases in which crack propagation instability is evaluated. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results and good agreement is obtained. Also, the effect of the specimen geometry and loading conditions is analyzed.
