Abstract

Sedum praealtum (siempreviva), is used to treat tooth pain, swollen gums and in tonsillitis, therefore, it was considered necessary to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of siempreviva. Wistar adult rats were used, in which the inflammation was induced by subcutaneous implantation of cotton pellets (cotton pellet-induced granuloma). Five groups were formed, control group (vehicle), two treated-groups, with indomethacin and with diclofenac (5 mg/kg b.w.), treated-groups with lyophilized (100 mg/kg) and fresh juice of the plant (1mL/kg b.w.). At the beginning and after completing treatment (7 days, per os), one sample from caudal vein of each rat was obtained and total leukocytes and differential count were determined. At the ending the cotton pellets together with the granuloma were withdrawn and weighted, after were dried at 60° C until constant weight. They were weighted and by difference with the cotton pellet weight, the final weight was obtained. To histological study, a skin fragment in contact with the pellet was obtained and analyzed. Indomethacin, diclofenac and lyophilized decrease the inflammatory process with respect to the control group (p<0.05) and the fresh extract produced a decrease in the inflammation but it was not significant. The anti-inflammatory effect was supported by the histological results. Siempreviva induced an anti-inflammatory effect and the LD50 is higher than 3000 mg/kg, therefore it was considered not toxic.
