Abstract

The in vitro effect of Verbesina encelioides and Helianthus laciniatus extracts on the development of the phytopathogenic fungus Altemaria solani was evaluated as an alternative to the employment of commercial fungicides. Extracts were obtained with hexane, ethanol and water. Activity was evaluated by measuring the development of fungus in Petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar in which extracts were dissolved at concentrations from 0 to 2000 ppm. The effects were compared with two commercial fungicides, Captan of chemical origin, and Sedric 650 of biological origin. The results showed that the aqueous extracts of both species presented the most inhibition in the development of the fungus, with ranges of inhibition of 75 to 85% and 70 to 81%, respectively. Helianthus laciniatus was more active than Verbesina encelioides equaling the activity shown by the commercial fungicides. Although these results are preliminary, the extracts may be a viable alternative of control for this pathogen.
