Abstract

the Pinus leiophylla bark (Pinaceae) is used in Mexican Folk Medicine as an anti-inflammatory drug, therefore, it was important to evaluate this effect, on cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation in rats. Aqueous extract (74 mg/kg) and indomethacin (5 mg/kg) induced an anti-inflammatory effect, however, only indomethacin and aqueous extract reduced the granuloma dry and final weight (p<0.05). Aqueous extract (37 mg/kg) did not show any effect. Indomethacin induced an evident gastroduodenal irritation, whereas aqueous extract (74 mg/kg) induced only a slight duodenum reddening. Indomethacin and aqueous extract (74 mg/kg) decrease the inflammatory cell population. The LD50 was higher than 40 g/kg. Pinus leiophylla induced an anti-inflammatory effect (74 mg/kg). Aqueous extract was non toxic.
