Abstract

The absorption of a bound negative pion by a nucleus generally results in the emission of two nucleons, thus, with the residual nucleus, forming a three-body system in the final state. The theory of such systems based on the Faddeev equations is presented, and is adapted for use in nuclear reactions leading to the simultaneous emission of two nucleons. Numerical results are presented for double-neutron emission following pion absorption in 12C, using one-term separable potentials to simulate the neutron-nucleus interaction in several partial waves, and a two-term separable potential for the nucleon-nucleon interaction to include effects of a repulsive core. The consequences of the nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations inside the nucleus are studied.
