Abstract

This work provides information to relate the surface diffraction of elastic waves with relevant crack parameters such as depth and length. Diffraction of elastic waves by near surface cracks is analyzed. It has been observed that near surface cracks can modify wave propagation on the free surface. Results from an application of the Indirect Boundary Element Method presented herein, have shown that wave diffraction measurements can help in crack sizing. However, crack sizing from surface wave diffraction data is not straightforward for complex crack arrangements.
