DESIGN OF A COOLING APPARATUS FOR A HOT DIP ALUMINIZED STEEL WIRE.

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

Based on experimental observations that the growth of the intermetallic layer during the hot dip aluminizing process is more effectively prevented by the use of a tabular cooling apparatus than by alloy addition to the molten aluminum bath, an attempt was made to design an efficient cooling apparatus with the aid of a three-dimensional non-steady thermal analysis by finite element method. For a given steel wire diameter and coating thickness and, within a given wire speed range, several cooling sequences were analyzed, using some suitable heat transfer coefficients, in order to determine the necessary apparatus height and an efficient combination of cooling media. The obtained cooling curves will be useful in determining the apparatus dimensions.
