N2 - The objective of this work is to study the design and operation of a dilute acid pretreatment reactor for lignocellulosic biomass. An isothermic continuous reactor model is developed based on rigorous mass balances. Then the process design and operation are studied through steady state analysis, together with an optimization problem that maximizes the reaction rates of the sugar production and of lignin elimination. The results are presented in terms of flowrates of fermentable sugars and acid soluble ligning, defining operating ranges for an efficient continuous process.
