Abstract
The deformation of a vertical thin-walled tube filled with a liquid or a non-cohesive granular material is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Experiments using latex tubes filled with water or spherical glass beads have been conducted and the results were compared to theoretical results derived from the Janssen model. The results obtained suggest that soft elastic tubes could provide a simple and convenient means to investigate the forces that arise within different materials.
