Abstract

Lactate and pyruvate concentrations were measured enzymatically in the blood of 13 healthy adults, 20 to 31 yr old, and values for lactate/pyruvate ratio, redox potential and excess lactate change were calculated. Lactate and pyruvate concentration values found in the peripheral venous blood resembled those published by other authors. The levels of these acids in the venous blood were not always higher than in the arterial blood. Residents in Mexico City showed lactate and pyruvate concentration values in the venous blood similar to those found in people living in towns at a lower altitude. The lactate/pyruvate ratio in the venous blood was higher than in the arterial blood in the majority of the cases. The redox potential of the lactate/pyruvate system in the venous blood of the general circulation in half of the group of people was more negative than in the arterial blood. The values of the excess lactate change in the general circulation varied around zero.
