Abstract
Theoretical values of the nonlinear refractive index n2 of 16 rock salt-structure alkali halides are presented. The approach employed is based on the Phillips-Van Vechten interpretation of the bond polarizability model. Our results show that in halides with the same cation a monotonic, strong increase in n2 with the linear refractive index can be observed.
