Abstract
The external variables that control the key quantities found in a Hertzian type fretting fatigue test were investigated. The key surface tractions were determined by the shearing force whereas the surface displacements strongly depend upon normal contact pressure. These results contrast with the previous observations. They show that the contact pressure and the surface shear traction are controlled by the maximum tangential load. The interior stress field and maximum slip displacement are controlled by the normal contact load.
