A preliminary analysis of the 1996 channel tunnel fire by applying a TFSMS model

Abstract

New rail and road tunnels have been built over the last 30 years to cope with the need for more efficient transport systems and to satisfy the transport needs of increasing urban areas. Currently, these underground infrastructures are being used by millions of people every day. There has been a great deal of concern over fire safety in these systems over the last few years. This has been due to major fire accidents that have occurred in road and rail tunnels. For example, on 18 November 1996, a fire on Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) shuttle train No. 7539, travelling from France to England, forced the train to stop at about 19 Km from the French entrance. The paper present some preliminary results of the fire accident. The approach has been to use a Tunnel Fire Safety Management System (TFSMS) model as a 'template' with the 'system' in place at the time of the tunnel fire. Some preliminary findings have been highlighted.
