Resumen

A study on the magnesium removal from molten aluminum alloys using submerged SiO 2 powders injection is presented. The effect of chemical composition and particle size of the solid agents, melt temperature and injection rate on magnesium removal were evaluated. A decrease in the magnesium content from 1.2 to 0.02 wt%, with low inclusions content was observed at a laboratory scale, using a melt unit of 30 kg molten metal capacity. It was found that the magnesium removal rate increased as temperature and injection rate are increased and as particle size decreased. A first order kinetics was determined for all the cases studied, obtaining also the values of other important rate constants. Furthermore, the process was scaled up at an industrial level, having demonstrated its feasibility in reverberatory furnaces 3 tons in molten metal capacity.
