Resumen
The objective of this study is to determine population abundance of the giant squid Dosidicus gigas in Sonora, Mexico. The weekly information on catch per unit effort (CPUE) was analyzed from October 1995 to March 1996. Estimates were obtained by two methods: a) a non linear method and b) a maximum likelihood method with interaction between different fleets. The results showed an effort increment starting in January 1996, as well as a change in the catch from 100 t to 600 t per week, the CPUE decreased from 15 t to 1.5 t/fishing night. The initial biomass estimated with the non linear method was 146 352 t and with the maximum likelihood method was 80 800 t. The catchability was 4.29 x 10-4 , and 1.49 x 10-5 for vessels and artisanal fleet respectively.
