Resumen

This paper presents preliminary study to the performance of cactus mucilage and seaweed extract as corrosion inhibitors. Electrochemical cells were prepared using cactus mucilage and brown seaweed extract solutions at different concentrations and saturated with calcium hydroxide to obtain a pH of12.5. Each cell contained two steel bars with 9.5 mm diameter. The experiments were performedin two stages. The first stage was aimed to stabilize the rebars until passivation was reached; in second one NaCl was addedin five steps from 0.5 to 8g/L. Half-cell potential and Linear Polarization Resistance measurements were undertaken. Both additives work as corrosion inhibitors, especially the cactus mucilage at1% concentration.
